The first thing to know is – IPL hair removal is not rocket science and it is actually very easy to do. You will find it is very successful when you follow the instructions, so when you unpack your device, ensure you read all the instructions for the device you have purchased before you commence. Each IPL model is slightly different but the following will give you a general guide to IPL hair removal.
How Intense Pulse Light hair removal devices work.
IPL technology uses gentle pulses of light within the wavelength range of 550nm – 1200 nm. These pulses of light are applied to the skin and are absorbed by the hair root. This causes the root of the hair to heat up, which destroys the hair root.
Once the hair root is destroyed it cannot grow back again.
Before commencing with the fun part of hair removal, always read the health related warnings, contraindications and information supplied with each unit. The information is there for your benefit. We have listed some (not all) items below. Please check your unit for any further information information specific to your unit.
After 1st treatment
After the first treatment, it can take 1 to 2 weeks for the hairs to fall out. In the first weeks following the initial treatments, you still see some hairs growing. These are likely to be hairs that were not not in their growing phase during the first treatments.
After 2-3 treatments
After 2-3 treatments, you should see a noticable reduction in hair growth, however, to effectively treat all hairs, it is important to keep on treating according to the recommended treatment schedule.
After 4-5 treatments
After 4-5 treatments, you should see a significant reduction of hair growth in the areas that you treated with the device. A reduction of hair density should be visible as well. Keep on treating with frequent touch-ups (every 4 weeks) to maintain the result
1. Get skin ready
Before you use your device, you should pre-treat your skin by removing hairs on the surface of your skin. This allows the light to be absorbed by the hair below the skin surface to ensure effective treatment. You can either shave, short-trim, epilate or wax. Do not use depilatory creams, as chemicals may cause skin reactions. (If you choose to wax, wait 24 hours before using device to let skin rest. Take a shower before treatment to ensure all wax has been removed from skin.) Clean your skin and make sure it is hair free, entirely dry and free from oily substances.
2. Skin test
Check the skin tone chart to see if your skin type is suitable.
3. Hair test
Check the hair colour chart to see if your hair colour is suitable.
Selecting the intensity
The Ellesilk 500 Sensitive provides 8 different light intensities.
Refer to the Light intensity setting chart enclosed in your packaging to determine what setting is right for you. If you experience discomfort, lower the intensity.
